Dr Martens boots, shoes and sandals are also known as Doc Martens, Docs or DM's. The footwear is distinct because of its air-cushioned sole (dubbed Bouncing Soles), developed by Dr. Klaus Maertens of Germany. The first Dr Martens boot in the UK came out on 1st April 1960; with an eight eyelet, cherry red, Nappa leather design.
Dr Martens have almost inadvertently attained a status and cultural significance that could never have been foreseen back in April, 1960. Almost from the outset, DM's have won a diverse allegiance from an incredible array of subcultures. With each shift in your fashion and thinking, new generations have molded the shoe and recycled it for their own ends, each time injecting it with the new subcultural potency which in turn has mimicked by the next generation, heaping yet more heritage on its simple shape. Dr Martens are one of the oddest fashion trends of all time. They fit with boiler suits, combats, pinstripes or flowery dresses. They will probably be around as long as people have feet. They have always annoyed your parents. They remain the first and only boot of its kind on the market. Like the subcultures that created them, they are scruffy, smart, sexy, macho, fashionable, fashion less, classy, classless, uniform, unique. They are Dr Martens boots and shoes. Martin Roach
Over the years Dr Martens footwear has been called numerous different names due to abbreviations, misspellings etc. Such examples are Dr Martins, Dr Martin, Dr Marten, Doc Martins, Doctor Martins, Dr Boots and Dr Shoes. But they all stand for the same thing which is quality and comfort for your feet so no matter how you ask for Dr Martens you know exactly what you are going to get. Just make sure you pick the colour that best suites you as they range from black to hot pink.
The Late Great John Peel on Dr Martens: Throughout the Seventies and Eighties I kinda yearned for a pair of Dr Martens, only making my move when I realised that I was the only member of the family who wasn't wearing a pair. I bought a conventional pair of black 12 holers in Ipswich. My wife came with me. She knows that I like shopping about as much as I like flying; ie not at all. This morning she's wearing dark green Dr Martens. I'm still wearing the black ones that I bought in Ipswich. I wear them almost every day. Some of the stitching is awry and there is a centimetre long cut on the right boot where my toe-nail has slashed its way through the leather. A little water comes in when it's wet but not much. I also have a green pair of Dr Martens boots, more laces, but they're still covered with mud from Glastonbury festival and lead a quiet and lonely life outside the kitchen door. John Peel
